Top Hand Invitational a Huge Success!!

Lexington, OK- for the first 3 days of May 2009, ranchers, dog handlers and enthusiasts gathered at Yancy Paul’s ranch for the inaugural Top Hand Cattle Dogs Open Field Trial. The only one of it’s kind in the region, this trial drew competitors from 8 states and 4 different breeds of dogs. The rain, cold and thunderstorms added the authenticity everyone came for.

“We wanted to find out “Who is the Best Hand”” Says, Rick Scrivner, the trial producer and owner of Top Hand Cattle Dogs. “This trial was as real as it gets, even the mud!”

The weather did not dampen spirits as people came to test their dogs over 3 days and run for the money, with $2,000 added. The course was different each day, with all dogs running Friday and Saturday. 1 dog for every 5 entered came back to the finals on Sunday, based on the best time accumulated from rounds 1 and 2. All dogs in the finals started with a clean slate.

Each day included an outrun between 300-500 yards, gathering the cattle and bringing them into working pens. Once in the pens, the dog had to work the cattle through pens and alleys in different arrangements and load them into a trailer, all with minimal help from the handler. In rounds 1 and 2 the dogs worked 3 head of cattle and 8 head for the finals.

“We tried to set up courses that were as close to real ranch work as possible,” says Scrivner. There were 3 people who entered and had never been to a trial, just use their dogs for work at home. Glenn Williams from Kentucky is one of these guys. He had never been to a trial, just uses his dogs at home. He ended up in 9th after round 1, and 14th after round 2, leaving him 1 spot (7th) out of the finals!”

Money was paid out for the top 6 finals qualifiers, as well as both go-rounds on Friday and Saturday. Hooch, owned and shown by Darrel Cook won round 1, collecting $500 go-round money. CeeBee and John Logsdon picked up $250 as the round one runner up. Randy Reed pocketed the payout for both spots in round 2 with his dogs Dollar and Lucky, totaling $750 on Saturday. Out of 29 total dogs 6 came back to the finals and everyone in the finals took home a check.
